Grafting in Ribera del Duero
June 2010

The Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez selected four different villages - Fuentemolinos, Sotillo, Fuentecen, and Pardilla - in the Ribera del Duero region to work with in producing M2 Matallana. Each one of these villages holds the perfect characteristics for developing the Tinto Fino varietal, which M2 Matallana is one hundred per cent constituted from. Elderly villagers helped us locate the historic but abandoned vineyards in each of the villages and revive them. From the four different soils come four different characteristics which we then work with to make the final blend of M2 Matallana. To help us with the grafting process crucial to the production of the wine, we had to go outside of the Ribera del Duero region to El Tomelloso where the Lopez family are from. In so doing, the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez wanted to bring the tradition of craftsmanship, which the Lopez family are known for, back to Ribera del Duero. We hope the results will send vibrations throughout the region.
