West Thurrock Essex

Jason Orton
January 2009

Jason Orton has been a photographer for over ten years. His photographs combine topographical observation with a personal, cultural, literary and psychological interpretation of place.

He has worked as an editorial photographer for magazines and newspapers throughout the world. His work has been published in Art Review, Big, Blueprint, Creative Review, Citizen K, Domus, Mare, Ojodepez and The Guardian. Alongside this editorial work, he is involved in a number of long-term projects.

He is currently exploring a selection of post-industrial landscapes east of London. These landscapes are often seen as ‘blank canvasses’ that can be cleared or levelled flat, which can lead to a lack of awareness of important historical and cultural traces within them. He intends to compare the treatment of these post-industrial landscapes with the way that they are treated in other European countries, including Spain.
