Today, looking back over our history, we have realised that this company has been built on our travels, during which we have discovered a complex and unique Spain, with an amazingly rich and diverse landscape. These experiences have connected us with both ancestral and unknown viticulture and vineyards, each brimming with their own character and experience.
It’s been an emotional experience reliving how our ancestors used to work the land, moving tons of earth and stone, shaping the landscape and carving out plots and terraces that now lie practically abandoned, but which could become some of the best vineyards in the world. We have learned how they used endless combinations of different varieties to adapt to the diversity of the land and climate.
We have learned a lot. We have reflected and understood that respect for this heritage will be the foundation of all our work for the future.

1994
OUR BEGINNINGS
We started out with lots of ideas and very few resources.
We created our very first wine Alma, using the ancient Garnacha vines in the town of Sada, in remote Navarra. These were difficult moments for this variety and we wanted to highlight its qualities when the trend in those years was towards Cabernet and Merlot.
1995
MEDIEVAL CASTILLA
We explored the area of Arribes del Duero, where we encountered a rare and almost unknown variety of grape: Juan Garcia. We worked the medieval vineyards under arduous conditions.
1996
BASA DE RUEDA
We created a simple, honest white wine. We had to sell it… to explain that Spain was a land of white wine.
MÁLAGA
We arrived in the mountains of La Axarquía where we produced 2 barrels of its historic Moscatel.
1997
GARNACHO
Our devotion to Garnacho led us to explore other regions of Aragon, starting in Moncayo, at the foot of the Pyrenees, where we produced various wines. It was here that we met the Lalanne sisters who showed us the ancient varieties of Somontano, such as Moristél. We created some interesting wines but were unable to continue.
OLD MOUNTAIN
We persevered in Málaga, a difficult challenge that resulted in 200 bottles of our first “Old Mountain”.
1998
LANZIEGO / LANZAGA
We returned to Rioja. We wanted to make a wine “de pueblo”… and decided on Lanziego because of the distinctive landscape and contrasting climate. Here we would remain forever…
RIBERA DEL DUERO
We produced our first wine, exploring the towns of the region. We loved the austerity, the wildness of the land and the thick, rich skin of the Tinto Fino.
TORO
We created the first Dehesa Gago. We discovered a long and venerable tradition of viticulture, where generations of families worked relentlessly on their vineyards. We also discovered ungrafted Tempranillo.
GAGO
With Gago, we began our ongoing adventure with the graphic designer Fernando Gutiérrez, working on the aesthetics of the bottles, updating traditions and creating a striking image of the different wine regions across the country.
1999
CEBREROS
Here we bought our first vineyard, in the town of Cebreros in the Sierra de Gredos. A largely forgotten place with difficult terrain, but it was here we discovered beautiful strains of Garnacha surviving at over 1000 metres above sea level. The slate-strewn landscape of Arrebatacapas, unique in all of Gredos, inspired our dream of producing a great wine.
RIOJA
We acquired an old bodega in the barrio de las bodegas, where Hemingway spent time after the fiestas of San Fermin. We wanted to learn how people made wines in the 18th century. This place, which taught us so much, also preserves in its walls centuries-old yeast that continues to ferment our grapes to this day.
2002
EL BIBEI
We returned to Santa Cruz in Ourense, back to the true Ladieras del Bibei, that we had attempted to work with previously. This time we came to stay, buying the historic A Falcoeira vineyard. The old people of the town remembered it as the best in the region but it had long been abandoned. We wanted to replant, to return the vineyard to its former glory, a concept that some people didn’t understand. After ten years of effort we bottled the first, great wine, A Falcoeira A Capilla.
2005
PEGASO
We restored an old winery La Piñonera in Cebreros and began fermenting Garnacha grapes from the old vines of Pegaso.
2007
BODEGA LANZAGA
We built our first winery in Lanziego, with the help of architects Diego Garteiz and Paul Basañez who used the earth, iron, and even the staves of our old barrels to create a winery that subtly blends into its surroundings. Here we work surrounded by grapevines and oak trees.
2010
AS CABORCAS
After 8 long years we finally began to understand this site.
We decided to bottle a wine grown from an old vineyard; located in a part of town called As Caborcas. This is a unique vineyard, full of different varieties, of different ages from different strains, growing at different altitudes and exposures. We realised the enormous difference from one plot to another, mere metres apart. To explain and understand this plot better, we produced Falcoeira and later O Diviso.
2011
LAS BEATAS
We bottled our first vintage of “Las Beatas” after 20 years of hard work. This unique vineyard has helped us rediscover the taste of a forgotten Rioja, and we believe our dedication to working the most difficult of vineyards has been worth it.
TABUÉRNIGA
We bought this vineyard from a grower from Labastida, “El Chifla”. 4 hectares of small plots surrounded by fig, almond and peach trees. These vines saw “El Chifla” work the land for over 50 years and, in a way, we have inherited the vines and his work. We are committed to preserving and celebrating this work with a great wine.
2014
LZ, LANZAGA, LA ESTRADA
y EL VELADO
After 16 harvests in Lanzieg, the project is complete. We made LZ, Lanzaga and two other unique vineyards “La Estrada” and “El Velado”. We also revived a wine made long ago in Rioja: Rioja Corriente, or “Regular Rioja”. The idea to make a simple wine “de pueblo” using exceptional grapes makes perfect sense in a place like this.
2016
MATALLANA
For over 18 years we have been consolidating a very interesting vineyard of some 20 hectares in Ribera del Duero. We decided to make a wine that combines the grapes of five towns: Pardilla, Fuentemolinos, Fuentecén, Roa and Sotillo de la Ribera. It was here, in Sotillo de la Ribera were we laid down our roots, buying a house dating from 1730. This will be our bodega and the birthplace of our new wine, Matallana.
2018
VALVUXÁN
We acquired El Pazo de Valvuxán, a historic place very close to our As Ermitas and Sta. Cruz vineyards.
We loved the idea of restoring it. This is what we have been doing all these years: restoring vineyards, repairing old walls, replanting original vines, planting native trees and working to improve the place…
This is an enchanting land… we just need to work at it.
P.S.
This has been our journey thus far. It’s been far from easy, but we have enjoyed the 355 plots we have, some 80 hectares in total, and working with the 43 different varieties of native grapes. These have been the fruits of this exciting journey.
