Galicia is a mysterious, complex region, that combines both Atlantic and continental climates, where you can find both Chestnut trees and Rockrose plants. Hidden within this mystery is the potential to produce some truly exceptional wines.
The viticultural origins of this region remain a mystery. We like to think of Roman gold mines or the number of important monasteries and convents, and their influence on Galician viticulture. But, the true origin of viticulture should be credited to the humble vine grower, who moved tons of earth and stone to make these beautiful vineyards a reality.
Since 2002, we have worked relentlessly in Valdeorras to revive abandoned plots: co-planting indigenous varietals and learning from local viticulturists to best express the magic of this incredible place.
As a result of the arrival of Phylloxera, many vineyards had been abandoned for over a century, giving us the opportunity to rework and replant some original vineyards. Co-planting has been essential, and we have cultivated a number of varieties, including Merenzao, Sousón, Treixadura, Godello Tinto, Brencellao, Doña Blanca and Palomino. Spectacular vineyards such as Falcoeira, As Caborcas and O Diviso have helped us to understand the complexity of the region.
We believe that the future of Galician winemaking lies in the rediscovery, and indeed refinement, of the past. The 28 hectares of stubborn and difficult vineyards that form ´Ladeiras Do Xil´ is testament to our dedication to Galicia, an hommage to its history, its culture and of course, its wine.
