The great wines of the past were often sweet wines: Tokaji, Sauternes, Vin Santos, Madeiras, Late Harvest Rieslings, Vins de Paille,... all associated with the great wine regions of the Old World.

This was no different in Spain and in their first auction in 1769, Christie´s placed Málaga wines right next to the best wines from the Rhine and Burgundy.  However, sweet wines eventually went out of fashion, and vineyards and this traditional viticulture was mostly abandoned.

In the 1990’s, we decided to revive what no doubt had once been the most important of all: the “Mountain Wine” of Málaga. Located between the snowy mountains of Granada and the Mediterranean, these verdant, slate-covered slopes produce one of the purest Muscats in the world.

We were determined to learn everything we could, from both the mountains and from the people of Axarquía, who, for so many years, had unknowingly nurtured and cultivated what we regarded as the finest Moscatel. This style of wine was in real danger of disappearing, and so we felt compelled to launch our project, ´Molino Real´.

We worked difficult, almost impossible vineyards, which had miraculously survived thanks to the tradition of raisin production. We threw ourselves in with great enthusiasm but little knowledge about how to produce “Mountain” wine, with lines from Shakespeare and Alexandre Dumas resounding in our dreams. We also remembered that Hugh Johnson once said that old “Mountain Wine” was the best wine he’d ever had.

We have been working the ravines of Cómpeta for over 20 years. The result: MR, Old Mountain and Mountain Blanco have helped to breathe new life into a viticulture that otherwise might have disappeared.

It has been a great deal of work to produce a few bottles of wine, a wine far removed from the latest trends. However, we consider it an honour and a privilege to penetrate the mysteries of these mountains and their history, and these wines have made us both wiser and more humble.
